*Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Named after Jim Brady, who was serving as President Reagan’s press secretary when he was shot and permanently partially paralyzed in 1981, the Brady Campaign emphasizes education, litigation, and legislation to ensure that every community is safe, not only from mass shootings, but also from the daily toll of gun homicide, domestic violence, suicide, unintentional shootings, and police violence that plagues so many communities. In 1993 Jim and his wife Sarah succeeded in getting the bipartisan Brady Law passed and Brady Background Checks are now required on all handgun purchases from federally licensed firearm dealers
*Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) is a 501(c)(4) organization founded in 1974. It states that it is the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention organization. CSGV’s believes gun violence should be rare and abnormal. It pursues this goal through policy development, advocacy, community engagement, and effective training.
*Everytown for Gun Safety. “In 2013, Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America came together to tackle our shared goal of ending gun violence. Since then, we have combined the best minds in research, policy, litigation, advocacy, and grassroots organizing to grow Everytown for Gun Safety into a movement of nearly 10 million supporters.”
*Gun Violence Archives. As per their website, the Gun Violence Archives (GVA) is an online database of gun violence incidents collected from over 7,500 law enforcement, media, government and commercial sources daily in an effort to provide near-real time data about the results of gun violence in the USA. GVA is an independent data collection and research group with no affiliation with any advocacy organization. Its data has been cited by Supreme Court justices and by President Joe Biden.
Sandy Hook Promise — Preventing Gun Violence Before it Happens. As per their website, “Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Based in Newtown, Connecticut, our intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning our tragedy into a moment of transformation. By empowering youth to “know the signs” and uniting all people who value the protection of children, we can take meaningful actions in schools, homes, and communities to prevent gun violence and stop the tragic loss of life.”
*National Rifle Association (NRA) The NRA was founded in 1871 by two Union army veterans. The primary goal of the association being to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis.” The NRA advocates for government policies and programs that support gun ownership.
